In this section, which I shall keep updating as often as I can, I shall try and explain how I am approaching learning Japanese. I have divided it into two sections – firstly some of the things I have to do as a part of my university course, and secondly things that I am doing in an attempt to have a bit of an edge when I go to Waseda in September!
University
Over my two years so far at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland, UK), I have studied using ‘Japanese for College Students’ (vol 1,2 & 3) which I have found to be quite good for grammar, although helpfully supplemented by tutorials. In addition to this, we have studied Basic Kanji Books 1+2.
In addition to textbooks, we have had specific kanji lessons every week, conversation lessons, lessons surrounding films (スタジオジブリ being a particular favourite!), had 花見 parties, and lots of other things, all encouraged by the staff who are (apart from 2 lecturers) are Japanese native speakers.
Extra work
Now, during term time, a lot of time is taken up writing assignments, doing translation projects, presentations and things like that! However, I still have managed to do some extra work! Since January, I accelerated my study of RTK1, which means that now I have in fact finished it! My NDS has been invaluable in this, and I would recommend that any fellow student makes the most of the region-free nature of the NDS platform to keep yourself ticking over. In particular the homebrew program NDSRS is amazing!
After asking around on the kanji.koohii forums, I have decided to start using the files (based on KO2001) on smart.fm to start learning vocabulary in context with sentences. I have started this only very recently, so I am not sure how effective it will be – but so far it is great, and iKnow seems really good, especially if you don’t want to fork out for Rosetta stone software!
Kanji learning is one of the most important things for me though, and reviewing is the only way I can keep on top of it! I am going to start working on RTK3 quite soon. I need to consolidate first though! I keep forgetting things at the moment, RTK1 is still all quite fresh, especially the latter 1000 characters.
Kanji learning
Having been learning Japanese for two years now, Kanji has come to play an increasingly important role in my studies, and as this has happened I have developed an increasing passion for this aspect of Japanese, especially in how the characters are formed.
My learning strategy for Kanji over the recent months can be summed up quite simply:
1 Study of Heisig’s Remembering the Kanji
2 Learning of kanji compounds encountered in Basic Kanji Book
3 Reviewing on-the-go on my Nintendo DS, Anki, kanji.koohii site
The first of these, study of Heisig’s Remembering the Kanji, is the most important to me. My long term aim is to become literate beyond 3000 characters. Whilst this did seem quite daunting to me at one stage, with careful time management, and a great deal of reviewing, it has become quite a realistic target.
Over the period between First and Second year, I studied Heisig book 1 (2042 kanji) completely to the end (see Summer section of this portfolio), although the aim of this was not so much even to remember the kanji, it was more a way of helping myself through the psychological barrier that I had with kanji, by familiarising myself with them. Doing 20 a day was more than manageable, and this exercise was incredibly useful, familiarising me with all Jouyou kanji (常用漢字) and a few extra!
Come the start of university in second year, confronted with a lot more work to do for Japanese than I had had to do in my first year, Heisig took a back seat, and I focussed on learning new grammar items and kanji compounds, to get through my kanji tests.
Since January of this year, my year abroad has suddenly seemed much closer and more real. This being the case, I decided that it was time for the big push – to learn Remembering the Kanji 1, all 2042 characters, by the time of my Summer exams, with a view to completing Remembering the Kanji 3 over the summer period, arriving in Japan knowing the writing and meaning of 3007 kanji.
So far, I am completely on track, and I owe this largely to the variety of reviewing techniques I employ to keep myself ticking over, in short bursts of review. In particular reviewing on the incredibly portable Nintendo DS has proved to be kanji-life-changing, as I can review absolutely anywhere! Also, with the wealth of software available for the platform, aimed at Japanese children, using a mixture of this and SRS (spaced repetition system) flashcard software (for which I made files based on Heisig’s volumes), I have seen a marked improvement in my ability to retain Kanji.
The main potential problem with my method, with the emphasis on Heisig’s method, is that my vocabulary itself does not increase, as I am not learning the reading of kanji at the same time as the writing. However, now I have learnt 2042 kanji, and that number will be 3007 by the end of July, learning words will simply be that – learning words, as I am unlikely to see characters that I don’t know, and this process will be vastly sped up, meaning that acquiring vocabulary once I’m in Japan will be made much easier, and I won’t be spending all my time learning how to write the characters. This being the case, I do however do a great deal of vocabulary learning, based largely on the vocabulary found in the BKB1 and BKB2 volumes that are part of the course at Edinburgh.
It should be pointed out that there are 3 books in the Heisig series. RTK1 and RTK3 are the books that introduce kanji; RTK2 is a book devoted to structured learning of the readings of the characters in RTK1, and I shall probably be studying that in the period August/September, once RTK3 is under my belt. In addition, RTK3 has a section devoted to readings and compounds based on the kanji encountered solely in this book, and it can be studied in the same way as RTK2.
I do my best to keep a balance between learning the writing, meaning and readings of Japanese Kanji. On its own, Heisig could be of very limited use to a student of Japanese. However, it is my opinion that if you use the series as a part of your Japanese studies, it is an enormously valuable asset, especially when one considers the timescale of my Japanese learning process.
Over Summer 2009 I am doing a great deal of work in preparation for my placement exam when I arrive in Waseda – some of this is being documented on the Blog actually!
At the bottom here I’ve put a list of the kanji I know (the kanji in fact presented in Heisig’s Remembering The Kanji Vol.1, which I would recommend to anyone learning Japanese!!!) Below that, I have put the RTK3 Kanji that I have so far studied (up to 2200 this week!)
